Short Overview
Xiaomi has filed a patent application for a revolutionary fingerprint scanning technology that works across the entire screen. While on the contrary, Xiaomi is not the first company to file a patent for all-screen fingerprint under-display technology. Back in August 2020, Huawei patent a similar all-screen fingerprint under-display technology.
However, the technology is not yet commercially available. So, Xiaomi may still be the first company to release a smartphone with an all-screen fingerprint scanner. We’ll take a look at how Xiaomi’s all-screen fingerprint scanner works in this article.
Before heading, we will make a mental picture of the whole display from top to bottom:
- Capacitive touch screen layer
- Infrared light receivers
- Infrared LED light transmitters
- AMOLED display.
How does the Xiaomi All-Screen Fingerprint Scanner incorporate?
The technology works intently with infrared LED transmitters and receivers placed between a capacitive touch-screen layer and any AMOLED display. The optical ones use the reflected light from your phone’s display to create a 2D representation of your fingerprint. Furthermore, the data is compared to the data in the database to see whether there is a match. Moreover, ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors work by mapping a 3D image of your fingertip using ultrasonic sound waves. And Ultrasonic waves are projected from the phone’s surface to take in the input when you place your finger on the screen to unlock it.
Meanwhile, Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are, in theory, superior to optical fingerprint sensors this is because it records a 3D image of the fingerprint. Above the infrared LED light transmitters will be an array of infrared light receivers. Likewise, above said infrared LED light transmitters and receivers serve as the foundation for the all-screen fingerprint scanner. After, the data is subsequently processed, and the device is unlocked if it matches the record
What additional does it offer?
When a user touches the screen for biometrics, the capacitive touch layer registers the touch and analyses the fingerprint’s position. In addition to saving battery life and protecting your eyes, it illuminates the screen where the finger is placed.
Price and Availability
Xiaomi’s flagship is expected to feature an all-screen fingerprint scanner shortly, but there is no news on when that will happen. Of course, we’ll keep a watch on this intriguing patent and keep you updated if anything noteworthy happens.
