- Two M1 Max chips function as one known as “UltraFusion.”
- Peak Performance and Power Efficiency
- Memory configuration up to 128GB.
- High-speed communication of up to 2.5TB/s.
Apple’s event was not so quiet, mainly because of its major announcement at an event. Apple held its Peek Performance, introducing the iPhone SE 2022, a new iPad Air model, a new Mac Studio with a Studio Display, a new color for the iPhone 13 series, and the latest most powerful chip in its M-series of in-house silicon.
According to Apple, the M1 Ultra chip is the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer. The Apple M1 Ultra is built around an architecture that connects the dies of two M1 Max chipsets. Previously, the M1 Max chipset was considered the most powerful chipset.
With that in mind, let’s have a look at what the Apple M1 Ultra chip has to offer.
Apple M1 Ultra chip Overview
The M1 Ultra chip has overtaken the M1 Max as the most powerful chip in the Apple Silicon family. Meanwhile, the Mac Studio is the only device to be powered by the M1 Ultra. But, Apple has hinted that the M1 Ultra could make its way to the Mac Pro in the future.
Furthermore, the M1 Ultra model combines two M1 Max CPUs into a single box with a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine. Similarly, M1 Ultra can be configured up to 128GB of memory. Moreover, the CPU, which has a staggering 114 billion transistors, powers the new Mac Studio desktop computer that costs $3,999.
Having been said that, you should note that these are not the revised M1 Max chips. These are the original M1 Ultra chips, with hardware and the code macOS uses to work with the new Mac Studio.
You may have missed some additional information about the latest Apple M1 Ultra chip, just as you may have missed this information. Don’t worry because we have compiled a list of the five things you probably have overlooked in the Apple M1 Ultra chip.
5 Things you probably missed out in Apple M1 Ultra Chips
1. Ultra Fusion Architecture
The M1 Ultra is built on the incredibly powerful and energy-efficient M1Max. Meanwhile, they have used Apple’s custom-built packaging architecture; the die of two M1 Max is linked using “UltraFusion” to create M1 Ultra.
Generally, the most popular technique to scale performance is to connect two CPUs through a motherboard. It often comes with substantial trade-offs, such as higher latency, lower bandwidth, and increased power consumption.
Apple’s UltraFusion, on the other hand, uses a silicon interposer to connect the chips across more than 10,000 signals, resulting in a whopping 2.5TB/s of low-latency and inter-processor bandwidth. It is more than four times that of the top multi-chip interconnect technology.
Hence, this allows the M1 Ultra to function and identify as a single chip by software. In addition, it will eliminate the need for developers to modify programs to make the most out of M1 Ultra performance.
2. Efficient Power and Performance
The M1 Ultra is equipped with a 20-core CPU that includes 16 high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. Similarly, it gives 90% greater multi-threaded performance than the fastest current 16-core PC desktop CPU. In addition, the M1 Ultra uses 100 fewer watts to reach the peak performance of the PC processor. Because of this incredible efficiency, less energy is consumed, and fans operate silently during even the most demanding workflow.
Furthermore, M1 Ultra includes a 64-core GPU (8x the size of M1) for the most graphics-intensive tasks, such as 3D rendering and complicated image processing. It gives quicker performance than even the highest-end PC GPU while using 200 watts less power.
Moreover, the memory bandwidth has been enhanced to 800GB/s, while the M1 Ultra can be equipped with 128GB of unified memory.
Similarly, the M1 Ultra’s 32-core Neural Engine performs up to 22 trillion operations per second, accelerating even the most complex machine learning workloads. In addition, M1 Ultra boasts ProRes video encode and decode throughput, with double the media engine capabilities of M1 Max.
3. Healthy Future for High-Powered Macs
The M1 Ultra should soothe any fears about Apple’s Mac devices’ long-term viability as the company transits away from Intel processors toward its own M series chips.
The M1 Ultra is a high-end processor built for clients that can afford to spend a lot of money on computers to edit 8K movies, create 3D animations, and build software as quickly as possible.
Similarly, the delicacy of chips is less important to most of us than their utility. All we want is for our gadgets to work.
Yet Apple’s new chip announcement and its rising chip expertise, on the other hand, have already caused waves in the computer world. It is now forcing industry heavyweights like Intel to focus on improving battery life without losing performance.
Further, companies like Microsoft and Google are also following Apple’s lead and building their in-house CPUs.
4. Another Leap in Apple Silicon
Apple has put Apple silicon in practically every Mac in its current lineup. And each additional chip, the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and now the M1 Ultra, gives the Mac incredible new capabilities.
Meanwhile, the M1 Ultra has now completed the family of Apple’s M1 processors. It powers the all-new Mac Studio. It is a high-performance desktop machine with a reinvented compact design.
5. Next Big Picture
If you notice the pattern, Apple has been rebranding its products and services for a long time. Similarly, Apple has rebranded every piece of silicon it touches, from the A-series to the M1 class.
The M1 was part of something new when Apple released it two years ago: Apple Silicon. When Apple released the A4 in 2010, it marked the beginning of Apple’s bespoke silicon, which consisted of processors manufactured by Samsung but engineered by Apple.
Apple Silicon now refers to all of Apple’s SoCs, from the A13 Bionic through the M1 Ultra. It’s not just a token gesture. These processors are now obviously designed to function together (A13 Bionic in the Studio display and M1 Ultra in the Mac Studio), indicating the pinnacle of a longer-term strategy.
On the other hand, Apple is currently developing the next generation of Apple silicon. It will most likely not be made up of two or more M1 Max chips crammed together. It’ll be something even more powerful, perhaps the top of the line of an all-new M2 series. However, it is safe to assume that Apple will not rest on its accomplishments and make a surprising revelation at its next event.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Apple deserves praise for its ability to keep secrets for long periods and then reveal them with a bang. And there are no other brands on the market that can deliver the same level of surprise and shock as Apple did. Nonetheless, Apple has teased us with its upcoming products while still leaving us to guess.
